Mary and Toby visited Acadia National Park as their five-year anniversary celebration. Seal Cove Auto Museum is on the edge of Acadia National Park. The museum was enthusiastically recommended in all Acadia travel books but it still exceeded Toby’s already high expectation. The museum featured cars and coachwork between 1900-1920 (with a couple outliers), including many that participated in Pebble Beach and Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. The whole … Continue reading Seal Cove Auto Museum
The Shattenbaum PCA track day at Summit Point had many modern 911s, Caymans and Boxsters in attendance. Yours truly’s 1991 911 (Type 964) was increasingly a rarity, but nowhere near as rare as a genuine 904 Carrera GTS. It was a treat to see her running on track. Toby got a close up look of her groundbreaking fiberglass body and Fuhrmann 4 cyclinder engine. Right next … Continue reading Classic cars at Summit Point
Washington DC was still digging out from the worst snow storm in history. Eveyone had cabin fever. What better excuse to leave the house to go to the Auto Show! While Porsche was conspicuously absent from the show, there were still plenty of sports cars on display. From historical icons such as Shelby GT350, Ferrari 512TR, to modern classics like Lexus LF-A (that Toby saw … Continue reading Washington Auto Show 2016
2015 has been a good year for Team Shum. All three brothers were “back on track” with their new/rebuilt rides: Jonathan was on track 10 days at Road Atlanta, CMP, and VIR Toby was on track 7 days at Summit Point and VIR Kenny ran 4 autocross events To cap off the season Jon an Toby signed up for a track event at Virginia International … Continue reading Full Team in Action
Toby and Tory had a successful outing at Summit Point. After the first “shake down” outing last fall, Toby had a long to-do list to get Tory ready including: Replaced missing spoiler wall to improve air intake and engine cooling Removed fog lights to prevent debris damage (will eventually change to RS brake scoops) Install 92+ 4-piston rear brake calipers and racing brake pads Hmmm…wonder … Continue reading Toby’s back at Summit Point
Mary had something special planned to celebrate Toby’s 40th birthday. She needed the whole day for preparation so she arranged Toby’s fellow track rats and 17-hour karting enduro teammates Michael, Sam. and Lashdeep to take him go-karting. Michael came by around 10:30. Sam was running late so we warmed up with some Forza Motorsport. After a big lunch (that probably slowed our karts) the crew … Continue reading Surprise Birthday… Karting?!

After a 4-month search (and going all the way to Ohio), Toby finally found a 964 in excellent condition (and only 80k miles) to replace his Boxster race car. It was rotten luck that she was hit by a careless driver on her FIRST DAY out. The insurance company totaled the car but Toby decided to buy the chassis back and, with Jack’s help, build … Continue reading Toby’s 964 Resto-Mod (Thanks Europros!)
Tory’s restoration is complete. She was taken to Auto Sportsystem Group for a race alignment and was ready to be picked up. Cleared her spot in the garage the night before… Both of Toby’s next door neighbors were “car guys” (Greg, Eddie and Eric rode motocross and Jeffery had a vintage Lotus Esprit). They were all excited to meet Tory after hearing Toby talked about … Continue reading Tory’s home!
